General guidelines:

Its 2009 and the main goal for the mafia these days is to avoid detection and bringing heat to the family. This would mean using code language, keeping a very low profile and doing everything possible to avoid attention and heat from the FBI, PD. Some DOs and DONTs:
*Don't tell people you're in the mafia
*Don't talk about the members of your family
*Don't break the law in public
*Don't discuss business over the phone or anywhere bugs could be placed
*Use code language so people can't understand what you really mean
(calling the boss the uncle, guns = shirts. "Hey tell uncle Sonny I met
the guy with the shirts")
*Don't meet people in public where you could be photographed, for
really important meetings set up checkpoints so you control the area
where the meeting takes place. Maybe change the location at the last
minute so its even harder for people to trace you.
*Always make sure no one even knows you're a wiseguy. In a perfect
world no one would even know your family even excists and you just do
your business in the shadows avoiding the FBI and any heat to the family.
*These days you cant just run over people because the FBI is very advanced and has good technology to
track you down and put you behind bars with proper evidence. Believe me
this will happen in MR and you will get jailed for a long time and its
pretty much a CK.

Joining the mafia, being in the mafia and rank descriptions:

Now in real life it would take you months or even years before they trust you enough to
bring you into the family. This means that anyone you want in your
family needs a trial period of at least a week as a civilian muscle.
During this time you learn to know them and have them commit small crimes just to make sure they are not an undercover cop. You want to be known for a family that's difficult to join because that brings respect and good RPers. Now that you've managed to get involved with someone from the family and passed all the tests they might bring you into the family (/invite).

Since it was so hard to
get into the family you are now terrified of all the higher ranks and
would never even think about disrespecting anyone or getting out of
line. This is the time where you just shut up and do what you're told
and hope you don't get whacked. Remember that as soon as you become a
liability for the family they will get rid of you so its your goal to
survive. Want a promotion? Do your job and if you do well you will be
noticed and promoted, no one likes a rank horny bitch who cries all
day. Here are some basic rules to make sure you survive in a family and move up the ranks:
*Follow orders
*Don't get involved in conversations that don't concern you
*Don't disrespect anyone
*Don't suggest anything, your superiors make the decisions
*Just try not to piss people off or be annoying, if there's anything you need to talk about do it in private

Rank descriptions:

Associate/Enforcer/Picciotto: You are new to the family and work as muscle for your soldier or capo, at that point you are just trying to survive and make sure you don't get whacked.

Soldier: A made man for the family who does most of the work, you've
gained some respect but still keep a low profile and do what your capo
tells you.

Caporegime: He controls all the soldiers or his own crew if the family
is bigger. He should avoid getting involved as much as possible and
just sending his soldiers to do the dirty work. The Capo's job is to keep everyone under control and dictate the action.

Underboss: Right hand man for the boss, he's in charge when the boss isn't around. His job is to
control the Capos and give out orders. An underboss should never get
involved in any of the dirty work and just completely stay out of
trouble by not breaking the law.

Consiglieri: The legal/tactical advisor for the boss. He gives the boss
advice on legal matters and helps the family when they get arrested or
have evidence against them. A consiglieri also has connections in
PD,FBI and the government enabling him to
bribe high level officials. A consiglieri is also a businessman and
helps the family manage their businesses. He should never break the law
or get involved in any illegal activities.

The Boss/Don: A good Don operates from the shadows and only has contact
with his underboss and consiglieri. He does everything he can to
hide his identity and keep a low profile. Sometimes even ranks as high
as Capo don't know the boss. The boss makes all the key decisions in
the family and keeps things organized.

The chain of command: This means you're only involved with your crew. A
new associate would never be in contact with anyone besides his own
crew and his capo. A consiglieri would only be in contact with the don,
underboss and sometimes a capo if they are in trouble. A capo would get
his orders from the underboss and then run his crew.

Family businesses:

The business side has changed a lot in the last 20 years but we cant RP
most of it so here are the things we can do: extortion, kidnapping, gun
smuggling, drug smuggling, gambling, prostitution, legal businesses.
You dont need scripts to RP any of this, you can simply pick up some drugs and sell it to
another family and RP the meeting etc. Just be creative. You can show
up at a random business and RP with an imaginary shop owner, maybe they
dont wanna pay so you beat them up a little. You might even make an
example out of someone and whack them, then get rid of the body by
butchering and dumping it. Maybe you know someone who runs a business
that can help you get rid of the body.


Your character and how to RP it:

People keep forgetting they are a wiseguy. Try to
act like one and be tough, ruthless but also intelligent and in
control. You might have some unique qualities or skills like always
smoking a cigar or using certain words. You might be a bad driver or
swear a lot. Just make your character unique and be creative with it.
